Drifting roe is very effective in the Umpqua River during the Fall Chinook Salmon runs. Casting with a float set to 8 to 10 feet is a problem unless you use the Float Stop Knot!
The float fisherman uses a slipping float for casting with a knot that stops the float from running up the line by using the 'Float Stop Knot'. It has the advantage that the stop moves readily over the guides, but grips the monofilament so tight that it will not slide over the line. It should be made with about 4 inches of nylon, usually the same diameter as the line itself. Add a small amount of weight within 14 inches of the hook to sink the egg cluster by the end of the drift. Most Chinooks will hit the eggs during the decent! Watch the slack in your line as a strike indicator. This is tricky but when you get it right you will catch fish!
