Umpqua Fishing Log...."flog" by James Wardrope
Summery: The bass fishing is still good for small mouths in the Umpqua. Waiting for the main upstream run of Kings for 2011.
16 Sept 2011....water temperature at Elkton 8:00 am 68 degrees......by 1 pm it had increased to 71 degrees. Water is clear. A few Jacks and Silvers in the River...The first of the Run......most fish are still out in ocean...deep water feeding.
17 Sept 2011....water temperature at Elkton 8: 51 am 72 degrees. Water still clear....no rain.....Very few splashes.....not as man fish in this section as yesterday.
18 Sept 2011....water temperature at Elkton 7:58 am 70 degrees. "dido" yesterday. High today was 87 degrees...too hot.
20- 22 Sept.....did not fish....very few splashes in this section of river ....salmon still out....bass fishing is good. Weather in the high 80....river temperature still climbing...need rain...or cooler weather ....I have found anything above 68 degrees impedes the salmon bite but improves the bass activity. I understand from reliable sources that they are starting to pick up salmon at the mouth of the Umpqua.....Salmon Harbor still slow for bank fishing.
23-30 Sept....recent rain on the south and north umpqua will raise the river several inches and cool it off. This should improve Salmon numbers and activity in the near future.
1-9 Oct....The river is up to 3.58 feet and starting to fall...temperature is in the low 60 and many fish....silvers and kings are in the river....Good response with a number 6 blue fox lure (green or red). Fresh roe is also great.
10 Oct -...The river continues to fall...a little rain today but not enought to raise the river. The river temperature remains cool at 60 degrees. Lots of Salmon everywhere in the river, it should be a great Oct for Salmon fishing. Remember we have rooms as low as $29.00.. call for availability...541 389 2359...Some of the best Salmon fishing in the Deep holes of Elkton.....Within walking distance of the Inn..
Dec 3, 2011 From Tyee Bridge to Yellow Creek was fished with few Steelhead caught. A couple of sea-run cut-throat were caught about 1/2 lb. in size. I spoke with a guide Scott Wolfe of the Wolfe Pack Guide service and he thought from Elkton to the End of Henderer Rd. would be a good area to pick up the Steelies. He will be fishing it tomorrow. I will let you know the results...Still a bit early....water is clear with no debris and the fish are scattered. Barometer is on a slight rise as of this A.M..The water temperature is approx. 59 degrees at Yellow Creek. You can see the dynamic water level at Elkton on our web site or this link. Click Here! Look for the species calendar on this page too. The current thinking from several guides is that the fish are still closer to the ocean at this time. New boat ramp is available right below the River Inn. This information is from Scott Wolfe of Wolfe Pack Guide Service here in Elkton...you can find him on our web site under Guides....541 580-2103....
Call me for current information at 541 480 0212. Jim ....stay with us at the River Inn Elkton, only 30 minutes from the coast. Rooms are less expensive than at the coast....warmer weather...great resturants near the River Inn Elkton with the sound of the river not the highway.......booking availability at 541 389 2359 Margaret
